Is an
Ex-Racer right for you?
Off the Track Thoroughbreds
(OTTB) are well-bred athletes. Similar horses, specifically bred for hunting, jumping, eventing, dressage, barrel racing,
etc., would cost a LOT more money! You CAN find that dream show or companion horse in an OTT'er with patience and help
from Mix & Match. And, best of all, you're saving a life!
What to expect...
OTT'ers are NOT
for beginners. The CAN be, after an experience trainer works with them, lets them "down" and starts their re-schooling
process. If you are not an experienced trainer, but feel you're ready for the OTTB challenge, you can be better prepared
by knowing what to expect. There are a lot of wonderful articles on several great web sites on our "LINKS" page.
These articles and web sites will help you understand where these athletic souls came from and why they do the things they
do!
They just need to be taught!
Please note that nearly all OTTB's listed on this site are strictly "track-broke."
They have not jumped, or been in a riding ring - they will come to you as 'green prospects only.' It's difficult
to generalize how quickly a horse will re-school, because they're all different. Some folks suggest ONLY turnout for two
to three months, THEN re-school; others say turnout & re-school at the same time, right away. That's your call, depending
on the horse - either way works.
Once you get them home, remember that they're extremely fit, and will
most likely need to flush their system of chemicals and hi-powered vitamins, minerals and high-protein grain. This will take
at least 30 days, dependent on the horse himself.
